February Vistas

This year I am trying to follow through on a suggestion Terri made to document the backyard in photos and videos once a month. My intent is to do this on the same day of the month and from roughly the same locations.

I will post the videos each month and occasionally a small number of photos. The monthly posts will let you see seasonal development of native plantings here and offer a comparison with what you see in your area. Toward the end of the year I will compile photos showing the monthly progression of select beds.

February notes:

  • We have not done clean up of beds in order to preserve overwintering habitat (especially for native bees and lepidoptera).
  • Leaves have been put into beds (unmulched).
  • Pruning of oaks and other trees has not been done yet (we actually did it the following day). We try to prune in winter during solid periods of temperatures below 50 degrees F to minimize exposing tree wounds to insect transmission of diseases… particularly oak wilt. I also rinse pruners with rubbing alcohol between trees to minimize disease transmission.
